Does Steelcase (NYSE:SCS) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Steelcase(纽交所:SCS)值得加入您的自选吗?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Steelcase (NYSE:SCS). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Steelcase's Improving Profits

Steelcase

In the last three years Steelcase's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, Steelcase's EPS grew from US$0.48 to US$1.08, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 126% year-on-year growth like that.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Steelcase's EBIT margins are flat but, worryingly, its revenue is actually down. Suffice it to say that is not a great sign of growth.

Are Steelcase Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Steelcase

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Steelcase followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$315m. That equates to 21% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Looking very optimistic for investors.
