Passive investing in an index fund is a good way to ensure your own returns roughly match the overall market. When you buy individual stocks, you can make higher profits, but you also face the risk of under-performance. Investors in Richinfo Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300634) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 29%. That's disappointing when you consider the market declined 19%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 6.1% in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 16% in the last three months. But this could be related to the weak market, which is down 8.4% in the same period.

The recent uptick of 6.4% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unfortunately Richinfo Technology reported an EPS drop of 50% for the last year. The share price fall of 29% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have expected earnings to drop faster.

Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 19% in the twelve months, Richinfo Technology shareholders did even worse, losing 28% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Richinfo Technology has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
