Investors Who Have Held COSCO SHIPPING Development (HKG:2866) Over the Last Three Years Have Watched Its Earnings Decline Along With Their Investment
COSCO SHIPPING Development Co., Ltd. (HKG:2866) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 17% in the last week. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. In fact, the share price is down 37% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
COSCO SHIPPING Development saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 36% per year, over the last three years. In comparison the 14% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So, despite the prior disappointment, shareholders must have some confidence the situation will improve, longer term.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, COSCO SHIPPING Development's TSR for the last 3 years was -13%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective

COSCO SHIPPING Development's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 19%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 11% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand COSCO SHIPPING Development better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for COSCO SHIPPING Development (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
