Binjiang Service Group (HKG:3316) Jumps 15% This Week, Though Earnings Growth Is Still Tracking Behind Five-year Shareholder Returns
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Long term Binjiang Service Group Co. Ltd. (HKG:3316) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 190% in five years. It's also up 18% in about a month. But this could be related to good market conditions -- stocks in its market are up 11% in the last month.
Since the stock has added HK$732m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, Binjiang Service Group managed to grow its earnings per share at 38% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 24% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 9.54 also suggests market apprehension.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Binjiang Service Group the TSR over the last 5 years was 257%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

It's nice to see that Binjiang Service Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 25% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 29% a year, is even better. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Binjiang Service Group has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
