Looking at Trupanion, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TRUP ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net buyers. That is, there were more number of shares purchased by insiders than there were sold.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Trupanion

Trupanion

The Founder & Chair of the Board Darryl Graham Rawlings made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$500k worth of shares at a price of US$24.14 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$41.36), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Does Trupanion Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 3.6% of Trupanion shares, worth about US$63m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
