Insiders At Portland General Electric Sold US$2.9m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
The fact that multiple Portland General Electric Company (NYSE:POR) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
Portland General Electric Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The President, Maria Pope, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$44.75 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$46.77, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 22% of Maria Pope's holding.

Insiders At Portland General Electric Have Sold Stock Recently
We've seen more insider selling than insider buying at Portland General Electric recently. In total, insiders sold US$484k worth of shares in that time. Meanwhile Executive VP & COO Benjamin Felton bought US$522 worth , as we said above . Since the selling really does outweigh the buying, we'd say that these transactions may suggest that some insiders feel the shares are not cheap.
Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Portland General Electric insiders own 0.6% of the company, worth about US$27m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

The stark truth for Portland General Electric is that there has been more insider selling than insider buying in the last three months. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. But it is good to see that Portland General Electric is growing earnings. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
