CoreCivic Insiders Sell US$5.2m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
The fact that multiple CoreCivic, Inc. (NYSE:CXW) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
CoreCivic Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President, Damon Hininger, sold US$739k worth of shares at a price of US$14.62 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$13.72. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Does CoreCivic Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that CoreCivic insiders own 2.0% of the company, worth about US$29m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
