The Five-year Decline in Earnings Might Be Taking Its Toll on Flying Technology (SHSE:603488) Shareholders as Stock Falls 14% Over the Past Week
It's been a soft week for Flying Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603488) shares, which are down 14%. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. Unfortunately its return of 18% is below the market return of 22%.
Although Flying Technology has shed CN¥362m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Flying Technology's earnings per share are down 11% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
Since the EPS are down strongly, it seems highly unlikely market participants are looking at EPS to value the company. Given that EPS is down, but the share price is up, it seems clear the market is focussed on other aspects of the business, at the moment.
On the other hand, Flying Technology's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 7.3% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Flying Technology, it has a TSR of 36% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

We regret to report that Flying Technology shareholders are down 2.7% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 0.6%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 6% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Flying Technology (2 shouldn't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
