Possible Bearish Signals With Greif Insiders Disposing Stock

Possible Bearish Signals With Greif Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  2024/10/24 20:17

The fact that multiple Greif, Inc. (NYSE:GEF) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Greif

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP, Gary Martz, for US$3.1m worth of shares, at about US$68.46 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$62.27. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Does Greif Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Greif insiders own 36% of the company, worth about US$1.1b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
