Dolby Laboratories (NYSE:DLB) Investors Are Sitting on a Loss of 16% If They Invested Three Years Ago

Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) shareholders, since the share price is down 19% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 20%.

It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the three years that the share price fell, Dolby Laboratories' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 8.4% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 7% compound annual share price fall. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have previously priced some of the drop in.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Dolby Laboratories the TSR over the last 3 years was -16%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Dolby Laboratories shareholders are down 7.0% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 41%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 4% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. Before spending more time on Dolby Laboratories it might be wise to click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling shares.
