Northrim BanCorp's (NASDAQ:NRIM) 20% CAGR Outpaced the Company's Earnings Growth Over the Same Five-year Period
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For example, the Northrim BanCorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:NRIM) share price has soared 101% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. It's also good to see the share price up 26% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 12% in 90 days).
Since the stock has added US$63m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Northrim BanCorp managed to grow its earnings per share at 14% a year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 15% average annual increase in the share price. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Northrim BanCorp's TSR for the last 5 years was 149%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Northrim BanCorp shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 87% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 20% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. If you would like to research Northrim BanCorp in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
