We wouldn't blame Griffon Corporation (NYSE:GFF) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Ronald Kramer, the Chairman of the Board & CEO recently netted about US$23m selling shares at an average price of US$74.20. That's a big disposal, and it decreased their holding size by 14%, which is notable but not too bad.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Griffon

Notably, that recent sale by Ronald Kramer is the biggest insider sale of Griffon shares that we've seen in the last year. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$77.39. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Griffon insiders own 7.9% of the company, currently worth about US$302m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
