CaliberCos Inc. (NASDAQ:CWD) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 25% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 65% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, CaliberCos may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Capital Markets industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.5x and even P/S higher than 9x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
What Does CaliberCos' P/S Mean For Shareholders?
CaliberCos hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
CaliberCos' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 21% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 97% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 60% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 9.3%.
With this information, we are not surprised that CaliberCos is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From CaliberCos' P/S?
Having almost fallen off a cliff, CaliberCos' share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of CaliberCos' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
