Pulling Back 18% This Week, Yiren Digital's NYSE:YRD) One-year Decline in Earnings May Be Coming Into Investors Focus
It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Yiren Digital Ltd. (NYSE:YRD) share price down 20% in the last month. But looking back over the last year, the returns have actually been rather pleasing! In that time we've seen the stock easily surpass the market return, with a gain of 62%.
In light of the stock dropping 18% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive one-year return.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over the last twelve months, Yiren Digital actually shrank its EPS by 6.7%.
So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
Absent any improvement, we don't think a thirst for dividends is pushing up the Yiren Digital's share price. Rather, we'd posit that the revenue increase of 20% might be more meaningful. Revenue growth often does precede earnings growth, so some investors might be willing to forgo profits today because they have their eyes fixed firmly on the future.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Yiren Digital, it has a TSR of 67% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Yiren Digital shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 67% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 0.9% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Yiren Digital you should know about.
