We wouldn't blame Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Eric Young, the Senior Vice President of Engineering recently netted about US$1.2m selling shares at an average price of US$10.55. That sale reduced their total holding by 12% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Snap Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Snap

In fact, the recent sale by Senior Vice President of Engineering Eric Young was not their only sale of Snap shares this year. They previously made an even bigger sale of -US$1.8m worth of shares at a price of US$15.91 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$11.42. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Snap insiders own 21% of the company, worth about US$4.1b. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
