It is a pleasure to report that the Shenzhen Leaguer Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002243) is up 61% in the last quarter. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. In fact, the share price is down 37%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Looking back five years, both Shenzhen Leaguer's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 17% per year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 9% compound annual share price fall. So the market may previously have expected a drop, or else it expects the situation will improve. The high P/E ratio of 63.13 suggests that shareholders believe earnings will grow in the years ahead.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Shenzhen Leaguer, it has a TSR of -34% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Shenzhen Leaguer's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 12%. The silver lining is that the share price is up in the short term, which flies in the face of the annualised loss of 6% over the last five years. We're pretty skeptical of turnaround stories, but it's good to see the recent share price recovery. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 5 warning signs with Shenzhen Leaguer (at least 2 which are a bit concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
