When close to half the companies in the Healthcare Services industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.3x, you may consider Waystar Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:WAY) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 6x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
What Does Waystar Holding's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Waystar Holding has been doing relatively well. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Waystar Holding's Revenue Growth Trending?
Waystar Holding's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 57% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 9.8% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be similar to the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it interesting that Waystar Holding is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Waystar Holding's P/S?
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Given Waystar Holding's future revenue forecasts are in line with the wider industry, the fact that it trades at an elevated P/S is somewhat surprising. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
