NOVA Technology Corporation Limited (SZSE:300921) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 14% is also fairly reasonable.

Since its price has surged higher, NOVA Technology may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Telecom in China have P/S ratios under 4.6x and even P/S lower than 2x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How NOVA Technology Has Been Performing

NOVA Technology has been doing a decent job lately as it's been growing revenue at a reasonable pace. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance is strong enough to outperform the industry, which has inflated the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for NOVA Technology, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, NOVA Technology would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 4.9% last year. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 13% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 4.9% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's curious that NOVA Technology's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends would weigh down the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From NOVA Technology's P/S?

NOVA Technology's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of NOVA Technology revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't impacting its high P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look similar to current industry expectations. When we see average revenue with industry-like growth combined with a high P/S, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with the industry too. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
