Earnings Grew Faster Than the 27% Return Delivered to Northern Trust (NASDAQ:NTRS) Shareholders Over the Last Year
We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Over the last year the Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS) share price is up 23%, but that's less than the broader market return. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 8.3% in the last three years.
While this past week has detracted from the company's one-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year Northern Trust grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 52%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 23% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about Northern Trust as it was before. This could be an opportunity.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Northern Trust, it has a TSR of 27% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Northern Trust's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 27%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 3% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Northern Trust you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
