TowneBank (NASDAQ:TOWN) Sheds 6.5% This Week, as Yearly Returns Fall More in Line With Earnings Growth
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the TowneBank (NASDAQ:TOWN) share price is up 21% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Over the last twelve months the stock price has risen a very respectable 14%.
In light of the stock dropping 6.5% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, TowneBank achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 0.8% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 4% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on TowneBank's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for TowneBank the TSR over the last 5 years was 43%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
TowneBank shareholders are up 18% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 7% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand TowneBank better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - TowneBank has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
