Insiders Could Have Profited By Holding Onto ODP Shares Despite 12% Drop

Insiders Could Have Profited By Holding Onto ODP Shares Despite 12% Drop

Despite the fact that The ODP Corporation's (NASDAQ:ODP) value has dropped 12% in the last week insiders who sold US$1.4m worth of stock in the past 12 months have had less success. The average selling price of US$55.00 is still lower than the current share price, or in other words, insiders would have been better off holding on to their shares.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ODP

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Diego Scaglione, sold US$1.4m worth of shares at a price of US$55.00 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$24.37. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it. Diego Scaglione was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Does ODP Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that ODP insiders own 3.4% of the company, worth about US$25m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At ODP Tell Us?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded ODP shares in the last quarter. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by ODP insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for ODP you should be aware of.
