The Three-year Earnings Decline Is Not Helping Navient's (NASDAQ:NAVI Share Price, as Stock Falls Another 10% in Past Week
For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Navient Corporation (NASDAQ:NAVI) shareholders, since the share price is down 39% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 22%. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 31% in the last year. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 14% in thirty days.
Since Navient has shed US$163m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the three years that the share price fell, Navient's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 48% each year. In comparison the 15% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have previously priced some of the drop in.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Navient's TSR for the last 3 years was -31%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Navient shareholders are down 28% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 26%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 4% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Navient better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Navient (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
