Expedia Group Insiders Sold US$4.5m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Expedia Group Insiders Sold US$4.5m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Over the past year, many Expedia Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPE) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
Expedia Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Legal Officer & Secretary, Robert Dzielak, sold US$1.7m worth of shares at a price of US$132 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$186, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 12% of Robert Dzielak's holding.

Insider Ownership Of Expedia Group
Expedia
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Expedia Group insiders own about US$1.2b worth of shares (which is 5.1% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
