Trek 2000 International Ltd (SGX:5AB) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 25%

Trek 2000 International Ltd(SGX: 5AB)
Simply Wall St ·  2023/07/06 06:43

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Trek 2000 International Ltd (SGX:5AB) share price has dived 25% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 45% share price drop.

After such a large drop in price, Trek 2000 International's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of -0.8x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Singapore, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 12x and even P/E's above 21x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

For instance, Trek 2000 International's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Trek 2000 International's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1,003%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 3.5% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's understandable that Trek 2000 International's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in Trek 2000 International have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Trek 2000 International

As we suspected, our examination of Trek 2000 International revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware Trek 2000 International is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those are potentially serious.
