To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Kanzhun (NASDAQ:BZ) so let's look a bit deeper.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Kanzhun:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.0013 = CN¥18m ÷ (CN¥17b - CN¥3.7b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

0.0013 = 人民幣 1800 萬元 ≤(CN¥17b-cn¥3.7b) (基於截至2023年9月的過去十二個月)

Therefore, Kanzhun has an ROCE of 0.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Interactive Media and Services industry average of 6.8%.

How Are Returns Trending?

We're delighted to see that Kanzhun is reaping rewards from its investments and is now generating some pre-tax profits. Shareholders would no doubt be pleased with this because the business was loss-making three years ago but is is now generating 0.1% on its capital. Not only that, but the company is utilizing 399% more capital than before, but that's to be expected from a company trying to break into profitability. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.

On a related note, the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets has decreased to 21%, which basically reduces it's funding from the likes of short-term creditors or suppliers. Therefore we can rest assured that the growth in ROCE is a result of the business' fundamental improvements, rather than a cooking class featuring this company's books.

The Bottom Line

底線

Long story short, we're delighted to see that Kanzhun's reinvestment activities have paid off and the company is now profitable. Considering the stock has delivered 4.8% to its stockholders over the last year, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet. So exploring more about this stock could uncover a good opportunity, if the valuation and other metrics stack up.
