Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ:SWKS) Jumps 3.5% This Week, Though Earnings Growth Is Still Tracking Behind Five-year Shareholder Returns
The main point of investing for the long term is to make money. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. But Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWKS) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 46% over five years, which is below the market return. Unfortunately the share price is down 3.3% in the last year.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, Skyworks Solutions achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 3.9% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 8% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Skyworks Solutions the TSR over the last 5 years was 60%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 22% in the last year, Skyworks Solutions shareholders lost 0.8% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 10%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
