Vistra (NYSE:VST) Stock Performs Better Than Its Underlying Earnings Growth Over Last Three Years
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. For instance the Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST) share price is 102% higher than it was three years ago. That sort of return is as solid as granite. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 25% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 14% in 90 days).
Since it's been a strong week for Vistra shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During three years of share price growth, Vistra moved from a loss to profitability. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Vistra the TSR over the last 3 years was 121%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Vistra shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 95% over one year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 14% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Vistra (including 1 which is concerning) .
