Repligen Insiders Sold US$1.7m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Repligen Insiders Sold US$1.7m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Over the past year, many Repligen Corporation (NASDAQ:RGEN) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Repligen

Repligen

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Jon Snodgres, sold US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$200 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$206). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 22% of Jon Snodgres's stake.

Insider Ownership Of Repligen

Repligen

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Repligen insiders own 0.5% of the company, worth about US$55m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
