Despite Shrinking by CN¥579m in the Past Week, Jilin Quanyangquan (SHSE:600189) Shareholders Are Still up 71% Over 5 Years

It hasn't been the best quarter for Jilin Quanyangquan Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600189) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 12% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been pleasing. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 71% in that time. While the returns over the last 5 years have been good, we do feel sorry for those shareholders who haven't held shares that long, because the share price is down 38% in the last three years.

Although Jilin Quanyangquan has shed CN¥579m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Jilin Quanyangquan achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 32% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 11% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Jilin Quanyangquan shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 30% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 11% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. Shareholders might want to examine this detailed historical graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.
