Getting In Cheap On GATX Corporation (NYSE:GATX) Is Unlikely

在紐交所(NYSE)以低價購入GATX公司的股票是不太可能的。

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider GATX Corporation (NYSE:GATX) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 18.8x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

GATX certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For GATX?

GATX's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 57% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 77% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 11% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 12%, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's curious that GATX's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Final Word

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of GATX's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for GATX (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you need to take into consideration.
