The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the VSE Corporation (NASDAQ:VSEC) share price has soared 208% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. And in the last month, the share price has gained 11%.

例如,VSE Corporation(納斯達克股票代碼:VSEC)的股票價格在過去的五年裏暴漲208%。

Since the stock has added US$72m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last half decade, VSE became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

It is of course excellent to see how VSE has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on VSE's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for VSE the TSR over the last 5 years was 223%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that VSE shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 63% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 26% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with VSE (including 1 which is a bit concerning) .
