Insiders were net buyers of Iridium Communications Inc.'s (NASDAQ:IRDM ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders bought more stock than they sold.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Iridium Communications Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when CEO & Director Matthew Desch bought US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$37.01 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$26.50 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. Matthew Desch was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Does Iridium Communications Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Iridium Communications insiders own about US$49m worth of shares. That equates to 1.6% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
