When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider EMCOR Group, Inc. (NYSE:EME) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 23.9x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

EMCOR Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors' willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as EMCOR Group's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 67%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 491% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 8.4% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 12% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's alarming that EMCOR Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What We Can Learn From EMCOR Group's P/E?

We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Our examination of EMCOR Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
