Multiple insiders secured a larger position in Marqeta, Inc. (NASDAQ:MQ) shares over the last 12 months. This is reassuring as this suggests that insiders have increased optimism about the company's prospects.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Marqeta Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Godfrey Sullivan bought US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$5.88 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$5.48. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$1.4m for 234.00k shares. But they sold 132.57k shares for US$758k. In total, Marqeta insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Marqeta insiders own 10% of the company, worth about US$294m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Marqeta Tell Us?

An insider hasn't bought Marqeta stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. On the other hand, the insider transactions over the last year are encouraging. On top of that, insiders own a significant portion of the company. So we're not too bothered by recent selling.
