Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Qilu Bank Co., Ltd. (SHSE:601665) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next three days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Accordingly, Qilu Bank investors that purchase the stock on or after the 5th of July will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 5th of July.

The company's next dividend payment will be CN¥0.22 per share. Last year, in total, the company distributed CN¥0.22 to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Qilu Bank has a trailing yield of 4.3% on the current stock price of CN¥5.08. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. So we need to check whether the dividend payments are covered, and if earnings are growing.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Qilu Bank has a low and conservative payout ratio of just 25% of its income after tax.

When a company paid out less in dividends than it earned in profit, this generally suggests its dividend is affordable. The lower the % of its profit that it pays out, the greater the margin of safety for the dividend if the business enters a downturn.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Businesses with strong growth prospects usually make the best dividend payers, because it's easier to grow dividends when earnings per share are improving. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. For this reason, we're glad to see Qilu Bank's earnings per share have risen 11% per annum over the last five years.

We'd also point out that Qilu Bank issued a meaningful number of new shares in the past year. Trying to grow the dividend while issuing large amounts of new shares reminds us of the ancient Greek tale of Sisyphus - perpetually pushing a boulder uphill.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. In the last three years, Qilu Bank has lifted its dividend by approximately 6.9% a year on average. We're glad to see dividends rising alongside earnings over a number of years, which may be a sign the company intends to share the growth with shareholders.

The Bottom Line

Should investors buy Qilu Bank for the upcoming dividend? Companies like Qilu Bank that are growing rapidly and paying out a low fraction of earnings, are usually reinvesting heavily in their business. This strategy can add significant value to shareholders over the long term - as long as it's done without issuing too many new shares. In summary, Qilu Bank appears to have some promise as a dividend stock, and we'd suggest taking a closer look at it.

So while Qilu Bank looks good from a dividend perspective, it's always worthwhile being up to date with the risks involved in this stock. For example, we've found 2 warning signs for Qilu Bank that we recommend you consider before investing in the business.
