There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.

So should Arcellx (NASDAQ:ACLX) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

How Long Is Arcellx's Cash Runway?

Arcellx

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. When Arcellx last reported its March 2024 balance sheet in May 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth US$574m. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$33m. That means it had a cash runway of very many years as of March 2024. Importantly, though, analysts think that Arcellx will reach cashflow breakeven before then. If that happens, then the length of its cash runway, today, would become a moot point. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

Is Arcellx's Revenue Growing?

We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because Arcellx actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. The good news is that operating revenue growth was as flash as a rat with a gold tooth, up 635% in that time. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

How Easily Can Arcellx Raise Cash?

While Arcellx's revenue growth truly does shine bright, it's important not to ignore the possibility that it might need more cash, at some point, even if only to optimise its growth plans. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Arcellx's cash burn of US$33m is about 1.1% of its US$2.9b market capitalisation. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.
