The fact that multiple Skechers U.S.A., Inc. (NYSE:SKX) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Skechers U.S.A Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Co-Founder, Michael Greenberg, for US$11m worth of shares, at about US$61.08 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$66.72. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 45% of Michael Greenberg's holding.

Does Skechers U.S.A Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Skechers U.S.A insiders own about US$416m worth of shares (which is 4.1% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
