Energy Vault Holdings, Inc.'s (NYSE:NRGV) stock rose 37% last week, but insiders who sold US$1.0m worth of stock over the last year are probably in a more advantageous position. Holding on to stock would have meant their investment would be worth less now than it was at the time of sale. Thus selling at an average price of US$1.78, which is higher than the current price, may have been the best decision.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Energy Vault Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman & CEO Robert Piconi bought US$148k worth of shares at a price of US$2.98 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$1.33). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. Robert Piconi was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Energy Vault Holdings shares, than buying. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year.
