While Shareholders of Calumet (NASDAQ:CLMT) Are in the Black Over 5 Years, Those Who Bought a Week Ago Aren't so Fortunate

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Calumet, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLMT) share price has soared 238% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. On the other hand, the stock price has retraced 9.7% in the last week.

In light of the stock dropping 9.7% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

Because Calumet made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

For the last half decade, Calumet can boast revenue growth at a rate of 8.4% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. We'd argue this growth has been reflected in the share price which has climbed at a rate of 28% per year over in that time. Given that the business has made good progress on the top line, it would be worth taking a look at the growth trend. When a growth trend accelerates, be it in revenue or earnings, it can indicate an inflection point for the business, which is can often be an opportunity for investors.

Calumet shareholders are down 5.7% for the year, but the market itself is up 22%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 28%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Calumet better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Calumet you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
