Insiders were net sellers of Kontoor Brands, Inc.'s (NYSE:KTB ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Kontoor Brands Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider, Susan Sumner, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$380k worth of shares at a price of US$73.71 each. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$69.52. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign. Susan Sumner was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Susan Sumner divested 9.02k shares over the last 12 months at an average price of US$65.51. Kontoor Brands Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Kontoor Brands shares. In total, insider Susan Sumner sold US$380k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Kontoor Brands insiders own 1.8% of the company, worth about US$68m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Kontoor Brands Insiders?

An insider hasn't bought Kontoor Brands stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. We're in no rush to buy! While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
