We wouldn't blame UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Thomas Roos, the Senior VP & Chief Accounting Officer recently netted about US$1.6m selling shares at an average price of US$570. However, that sale only accounted for 8.9% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

UnitedHealth Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, sold US$12m worth of shares at a price of US$521 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$565. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 48% of Brian Thompson's holding.

Does UnitedHealth Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. UnitedHealth Group insiders own about US$908m worth of shares (which is 0.2% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The UnitedHealth Group Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders haven't bought UnitedHealth Group stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. While insiders do own a lot of shares in the company (which is good), our analysis of their transactions doesn't make us feel confident about the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
