The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But the long term shareholders of Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. So they might be feeling emotional about the 56% share price collapse, in that time. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 37% in the last year. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 8.4% in thirty days.

With the stock having lost 5.3% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Although the share price is down over three years, Aptiv actually managed to grow EPS by 83% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.

Revenue is actually up 12% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Aptiv further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Aptiv shareholders are down 37% for the year, but the market itself is up 21%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 3% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Aptiv you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
