Darling Ingredients Inc.'s (NYSE:DAR) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 18x and even P/E's above 33x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Darling Ingredients has been very sluggish. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

NYSE:DAR Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry July 21st 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Darling Ingredients' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Growth For Darling Ingredients?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Darling Ingredients would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 26%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 52% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 9.1% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be similar to the 10% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that Darling Ingredients is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Darling Ingredients' P/E

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Darling Ingredients currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is in line with the wider market. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the outlook. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.

Before you settle on your opinion, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Darling Ingredients (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of.
