Liquidity Services (NASDAQ:LQDT) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
Liquidity Services (NASDAQ:LQDT) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So on that note, Liquidity Services (NASDAQ:LQDT) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Liquidity Services:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$25m ÷ (US$304m - US$133m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
0.15 = US$2500萬 ÷ (US$30400萬 - US$133m)(截至2024年3月的過去12個月的財務數據)。
Therefore, Liquidity Services has an ROCE of 15%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 9.7% generated by the Commercial Services industry.
In the above chart we have measured Liquidity Services' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering Liquidity Services for free.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Liquidity Services Tell Us?
We're delighted to see that Liquidity Services is reaping rewards from its investments and is now generating some pre-tax profits. The company was generating losses five years ago, but now it's earning 15% which is a sight for sore eyes. In addition to that, Liquidity Services is employing 32% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, both common traits of a multi-bagger.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. The current liabilities has increased to 44% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
In Conclusion...
To the delight of most shareholders, Liquidity Services has now broken into profitability. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
On a final note, we've found 1 warning sign for Liquidity Services that we think you should be aware of.
