While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. (NYSE:ALEX) share price up 18% in a single quarter. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. After all, the share price is down 15% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

While the stock has risen 6.0% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Alexander & Baldwin became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

We note that the dividend has remained healthy, so that wouldn't really explain the share price drop. It could be that the revenue decline of 22% per year is viewed as evidence that Alexander & Baldwin is shrinking. With dividends up, but revenue down, some investors might be concluding that the company is no longer growing.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Alexander & Baldwin will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Alexander & Baldwin, it has a TSR of 2.7% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Alexander & Baldwin shareholders are up 7.0% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 0.5% per year over five year. This suggests the company might be improving over time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Alexander & Baldwin (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
