Further Weakness as AEM Holdings (SGX:AWX) Drops 18% This Week, Taking Three-year Losses to 64%

If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But long term AEM Holdings Ltd. (SGX:AWX) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 66% drop in the share price over that period. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 59% in a year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 38% in the last three months.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for AEM Holdings isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

AEM Holdings saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earnings. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

AeM Holdings

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on AEM Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

AEM Holdings shareholders are down 59% for the year, but the market itself is up 0.5%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 7%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It is all well and good that insiders have been buying shares, but we suggest you check here to see what price insiders were buying at.

AeM Holdings
