Earnings Are Growing at Citizens Financial Services (NASDAQ:CZFS) but Shareholders Still Don't Like Its Prospects

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. That downside risk was realized by Citizens Financial Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:CZFS) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 36%. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 14%. To make matters worse, the returns over three years have also been really disappointing (the share price is 30% lower than three years ago). And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 22%.

We don't see any weakness in the Citizens Financial Services' dividend so the steady payout can't really explain the share price drop. From what we can see, revenue is pretty flat, so that doesn't really explain the share price drop. Of course, it could simply be that it simply fell short of the market consensus expectations.

The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Citizens Financial Services' TSR for the last 1 year was -34%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

Citizens Financial Services shareholders are down 34% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 14%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
