Here's Why We're Not Too Worried About Digimarc's (NASDAQ:DMRC) Cash Burn Situation

There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.

So, the natural question for Digimarc (NASDAQ:DMRC) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Digimarc(納斯達克:DMRC)股東的自然問題是他們是否應該擔心它的現金燃燒率。

Does Digimarc Have A Long Cash Runway?

Digimarc

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at March 2024, Digimarc had cash of US$49m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$22m. So it had a cash runway of about 2.2 years from March 2024. Notably, analysts forecast that Digimarc will break even (at a free cash flow level) in about 3 years. That means unless the company reduces its cash burn quickly, it may well look to raise more cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Well Is Digimarc Growing?

Digimarc

It was fairly positive to see that Digimarc reduced its cash burn by 47% during the last year. And considering that its operating revenue gained 21% during that period, that's great to see. We think it is growing rather well, upon reflection. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can Digimarc Raise More Cash Easily?

Digimarc

While Digimarc seems to be in a decent position, we reckon it is still worth thinking about how easily it could raise more cash, if that proved desirable. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Digimarc's cash burn of US$22m is about 3.7% of its US$613m market capitalisation. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.
