Despite Lower Earnings Than Five Years Ago, DongFeng Automobile (SHSE:600006) Investors Are up 58% Since Then

Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, the DongFeng Automobile Co. LTD (SHSE:600006) share price is up 51% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 0.8% (ignoring dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 16%, including dividends.

Although DongFeng Automobile has shed CN¥1.3b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

DongFeng Automobile's earnings per share are down 15% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

The modest 0.4% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. It is not great to see that revenue has dropped by 4.3% per year over five years. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of DongFeng Automobile, it has a TSR of 58% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that DongFeng Automobile shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 16% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 10%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that DongFeng Automobile is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about...
