Grab drivers throughout Malaysia have recently secured full protection under the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), marking a significant milestone in efforts to support gig workers. This development reflects a notable achievement in safeguarding the rights of workers within the expanding gig economy.

As a former Minister of Human Resources and Member of Parliament for Batu Gajah, I am delighted to see the ambition to protect gig workers finally realised. This progress represents a major step forward in securing the rights of those engaged in the rapidly growing gig economy.

The gig workforce in Malaysia is on the rise, aligning with global trends, as more individuals opt for flexible employment to achieve a better work-life balance. It is estimated that around 1.3 million gig workers are active across various platforms in Malaysia. A primary challenge for these workers has been the lack of formal protection.

It is crucial to highlight that gig workers have not been classified as employees under the Employment Act 1955. Consequently, they are not covered by this legislation and are instead classified merely as gig workers, resulting in a lack of formal job protection.

I commend SOCSO for its initiatives, particularly with the introduction of the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SESS) for freelancers. This scheme not only provides necessary protection for gig workers but also supports the sustainable growth of Malaysia's gig economy.

Looking ahead, it is suggested that SOCSO should broaden the scope of protection to include a wider range of gig workers, enhance awareness about the importance of social protection among these workers, and collaborate closely with digital platform companies to ensure adherence to social protection regulations.

The extension of SOCSO protection to Grab drivers represents a crucial advancement in the evolution of social protection in Malaysia. This move demonstrates the authorities' commitment to addressing the needs of the modern workforce and sets the stage for more comprehensive protection for all gig workers in the future.
